Description:

The McLain Group represents a client, a leader in the commercial nuclear power industry, with an immediate need for a Senior Safety and Health Engineer.  Our client offers competitive compensation, excellent benefits and promotes the development and success of their employees.

This position is a technical resource on matters relating to safety and industrial hygiene to the business units.  It is responsible for ensuring company safety programs and policies are being effectively implemented and are in compliance with federal, state and local safety codes and regulations.

Responsibilities:

  • Identifies and resolve safety issues.
  • Utilizes computer systems and spreadsheets to analyze, monitor and track safety systems.
  • Identifies substandard conditions, recommends corrective action and communicates findings.
  • Uses fact base analysis to identify root causes of safety and industrial hygiene problems or incidents and works with the business units on developing corrective actions.
  • Develops accident prevention programs, incentive programs and business unit safety objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop recommendations and monitor implementations.
  • Effectively interprets policies and procedures and provides appropriate guidance to organization.
  • Evaluates business unit production, maintenance and customer service operations, make recommendations and provides guidance and direction for improving safety aspects.
  • Leads technical safety audits of business unit compliance programs and safety initiatives.
  • Coordinates and leads a team on safety strategies.
  • Interacts effectively with line management, employees, union personnel, professional staff and regulatory inspectors to build relationships.
  • Works effectively within a diverse work group and responds to individual needs.
  • Engages suppliers and contractor services in supporting company safety initiatives and generating cost avoidance/savings strategies.
  • Crosses functional lines and business organizational units to share concepts, remove barriers and develop uniform implementation strategies.
  • Works independently in a self-motivated environment.
  • Strategically plans, organizes and prioritizes safety related issues, meetings and events impacting the business unit.
  • Works various schedules and is available 24 hour/7 day as needed.
  • Leads and instructs line management on the principles of hazard identification and control.
  • Fosters relationships with professional counterparts to maintain current on best in class performances and practices.

 

Requirements:

  • BS – Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, Physical Sciences, Environmental Sciences or related fields.
  • 5 – 10 years of safety & health experience in the utility industry or heavy manufacturing. Nuclear experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability working in a unionized environment, working with public interests groups, regulatory bodies and political affiliates.
  • Demonstrated ability working with multiple locations having diverse processes, products and business systems.
  • Demonstrated broad understanding of the industrial safety and health field e.g. emerging technologies, industry standards, system designs, and integration of safety processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and manage workflows to meet business unit and corporate safety objectives as well as changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated experience in interfacing with upper management, preparing written reports for upper management
  • Demonstrated ability in reviewing process designs and engineering prints and system safety reviews of existing installations and new process and equipment installations.
  • Demonstrated ability in the analysis of regulatory and legislative standards and policies.
  • Detailed knowledge of Federal, State & Local safety, health & medical standards.
  • Detailed knowledge of engineering concepts to control and mitigate safety & health hazards.
  • Detailed knowledge of safety management systems and their interaction with corporate business systems.
  • Detailed knowledge of chemical and physical hazards and the toxicological implications on human health.
  • Detailed knowledge of human performance fundamentals and practical plant applications.
  • Detailed knowledge of and application of industrial ergonomic standards.
  • Detailed knowledge of organizational learning and the ability to develop and deliver training programs to address organizational needs.
  • Demonstrated presentation skills that excite an organization to improve safety performance.
  • Proficient computer skills to create spreadsheets, documents, presentations and websites.
  • Detailed knowledge of safety equipment, safety devices, control technologies
  • Ability to develop written procedures and programs for business units.
  • Ability to support a multitude of diverse client groups through a general knowledge of enterprise operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and manage workflows to meet business unit and corporate safety objectives, business plans and changing priorities.
  • Ability to be creative and innovative.

 

Preferred:

  • MS/MBA – Industrial Hygiene, Toxicology, Safety Management, Engineering, HR Management.
  • Certification as Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Safety Professional (CSP), Professional Engineer (PE).
